About the course

GP Rating is a 6-month DG Shipping-approved pre-sea course open to 10+2 pass students from any stream. It's the fastest legitimate route into the Merchant Navy at crew level, leading to General Purpose (GP) Rating positions onboard cargo, tanker and bulk carrier ships.

Eligibility

Who can apply

  • 10+2 pass in any stream (Science / Commerce / Arts)
  • Minimum 40% aggregate in 10th and 12th
  • 40% in English at 10th or 12th level
  • Age 17.5–25 years (relaxable for reserved categories)
  • Medical fitness at a DG Shipping-approved hospital
Syllabus

What you'll study

Seamanship

Basic ship structure, deck operations, mooring, anchoring.

Engineering Basics

Introduction to marine engines, pumps and machinery.

Safety & STCW

Fire fighting, first aid, sea survival, personal safety.

Practical Training

Rope work, workshop, swimming, drills, ship visits.

English & Communication

Maritime English and onboard communication skills.
